Description
Socrates - Phos CD. First ever UK CD release of this gem by Greek group Socrates. Formed in 1971, the band was originally known as Socrates Drank the Conium. The band recorded three albums for Polydor in a heavy progressive vein before shortening their name to Socrates. Signing with Vertigo Records, the band travelled to London to record arguably their magnum opus—and the closest they ever came to the progressive rock genre. Lush, atmospheric keyboards enhance the intricate arrangements, which are on par with the best the international rock, hard rock and progressive rock could offer at the time. And the source of those keyboards: legendary musician and composer Vangelis, who not only played keyboards, but also produced the record; he also co-wrote the excellent instrumental 'Every My Dream Comes To An End.' As with Vangelis' own band, Aphrodite’s Child, Socrates fused rock and traditional Greek musical influences with great success, particularly on tracks such as 'Mountains' and the justifiably famous 'Starvation.' A much sought after release by progressive rock fans and Vangelis collectors, this edition of Phos has been newly remastered, fully restores the album artwork, and includes a new essay.
